Water damage restoration in Corpus Christi, TX
Most water damage in Corpus Christi starts with plumbing; some arrives with a storm. Either way the first hours decide how much has to be cut out, and in a city with a 77°F July dew point the house will not dry by itself.
For homeowners. You will be connected with an independent local contractor. Calls may be recorded.

The first hour
- Stop the water. The main shutoff is usually where the line enters the house or at the meter box near the street. If you cannot stop it, a plumber is the first call, not a drying crew.
- If water has reached outlets, cords or the panel area, turn the power off at the breaker only if you can do it standing somewhere dry. Otherwise wait for the utility or an electrician.
- Take photos and video of every wet room before you move anything. Your insurer will ask what it looked like.
- Lift furniture off wet carpet and move rugs, papers and electronics out. Do not run a household vacuum on standing water.
- Write down when it started and what failed. Keep the broken part if a plumber replaces one.
Clean water, storm water and sewage are different jobs
The restoration industry standard (IICRC S500) sorts water by how dirty it is. Water from a supply line starts clean. Water that sat a while, or came from a dishwasher or washing machine, is treated as gray. Sewage and floodwater from outside are treated as contaminated, and soaked porous materials such as carpet pad and drywall are usually removed rather than dried.
After Hurricane Hanna, NHC reported 3 to 5 feet of inundation above ground along parts of the coast, including Corpus Christi Bay and Nueces Bay. Water like that is the contaminated kind, and it is also the kind a homeowners policy does not cover.
Drying a house with a 77°F dew point
On a summer day the outside air here holds more water than the air in a room that is supposed to be drying. Opening the windows makes things worse. The house stays closed, the air conditioning keeps running if it is safe to use, and dehumidifiers and air movers do the work.
Dry is a measurement, not a feeling. A crew should take moisture readings in the wet materials and compare them with dry material of the same kind elsewhere in the house, and keep a written log until the numbers match. Ask for a copy: an insurer may want it.

Older homes: ask before anything is cut out
About 48% of Corpus Christi homes were built before 1980. EPA notes that some patching compounds, textured paints and vinyl flooring from that era may contain asbestos. If wet drywall or flooring has to come out of an older house, ask the contractor whether the material will be tested first.
After a storm: get the order right
Record the damage and the cause before cleanup, then report it to every policy that might apply: homeowners for water from inside, wind and hail (TWIA for many owners here) for a roof opened by wind, and flood insurance for rising water. If a federal disaster is declared for the county, FEMA assistance for households may open too. It did for Harvey in 2017 and for the February 2021 winter storms.
Figures that matter for a wet house in Corpus Christi
1981
Median year homes were built
Many homes of this age were plumbed in the years polybutylene supply pipe was common. It can split along its length, often inside a wall.
77°F
Average July dew point
Summer air outside holds more water than the air in a dry room. Airing out a wet room here makes it wetter; dehumidifiers do the drying.
0
Nights at or below 20°F, average year
In an average year a hard freeze does not happen. Supply hoses, water heaters and drains cause most indoor leaks.

Water damage questions
How fast does a wet house need to be dried?
EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. That is why drying starts before every insurance question is settled.
Do I call a plumber or a water damage company first?
If water is still running and you cannot shut it off, call a plumber first. Once the source is stopped, drying the building is a separate job for a restoration contractor.
Will my homeowners policy pay for storm surge damage?
No. Rising water and surge are covered only by flood insurance. The homeowners policy covers sudden, accidental water from inside the house.
Should I open windows to dry the house?
Not in Corpus Christi summer weather. With a July dew point around 77°F, outdoor air adds moisture. Keep the house closed and let dehumidifiers do the drying.
